Kimi's Recommended Books and Sites

I've had at least a little dealing with all that I’ve recommended, whether I’ve read them fully, or read pieces, some were books from my training and some recommended from other yoga teachers/friends.

Recommended Books

Light on Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar - Like a handbook for yoga, it outlines and pictures poses and gives breathing exercises and well as yoga philosophy, Iyengar – student of Krishnamacharya (known as the “father of modern yoga”) Iyengar yoga – is known to be very precise – very alignment based, so use of props is important, stability, strength, and mobility were what his students sought after and he gave

The Bhagavad Gita - A dialogue between Prince Arjuna and his charioteer Krishna, who is the god Vishnu in disguise – Arjuna is on contemplating the war and all its consequences – it’s a really beautiful conversation between the two about what is “right” and how do you choose to do what is right

Anatomy of Hatha Yoga by H. David Coulter - very much what the title says, it adds the science to yoga in an in depth way if that’s what you’re looking for

Power Yoga by Beryl Bender Birch - as the title suggests, it’s a book on power yoga, it gives instructions for a dynamic, powerful, and flowing practice

The Heart of Yoga by Desikachar - a really great book for any beginner or someone interested in deepening their yoga practice. It’s a sequence guide for the individual practice

How Yoga Works by Geshe Michael Roach - a beautiful story that incorporates and talks about the yoga sutras – a young girl, who has studied yoga from a master, who has passed on, is traveling to another master to learn. On her way, she gets arrested at the border because she is in possession of an ancient yoga text, which the local police didn’t believe belonged to her because she was a girl and a young one. The head of jail tells her to prove that the book is hers by healing his bad back with yoga. (I really do recommend this one, it took me a while to read because it was a lot to digest, but it was just a beautiful way to incorporate the sutras and just a good story)

The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga by Bernie Clark - I have not read this yet, but it’s on my bookshelf, and I’ve head teachers read from it in class, and it outlines yin poses and their benefits in depth

The Science of Yoga by William J Broad - sort of a fact or fiction, true or false, yoga book, it takes science and proves or disproves what yoga claims to do

The Wheels of Life by Dr. Anodea Judith - Another book on the shelf for me because it’s huge in knowledge, I’ve started, and it’s just a lot of very in depth information on the chakras

The Healing Self by Deepak Chopra - Another recommended book to me, and not directly related to yoga, but it talks about how our health is very much up to us, what we do, what we eat, how we think, all has an impact on our health

Ashtanga Yoga by David Swenson - Like Power Yoga, this shows sequencing for ashtanga yoga, it outlines all you need to do and work on with pictures to work on your ashtanga practice
